Valentine's Day Dinner

Melanie van der Meulen

Last night my BF treated me to a Valentine's Day Dinner at Zevenwacht Restaurant. On offer was a set menu of 3 courses for R295 pp plus 10% service charge.

Apart from a small glitch with our reservation at the start of the evening, it was a refined affair. Oysters and champagne to set the mood followed by starters. We both had the Chicken Livers in a Red Pepper Hollandaise with a Fine Leaf Salad. It was very good. Richly flavoured sauce, tender livers and tangy salad leaves. Hmmm!

For mains, I had the Pan Fried Kingklip with leek sauce & basil pesto/bacon linguine. The fish was nicely firm and subtly flavoured with the leek sauce, and the pesto and bacon in the linguine provided an interesting counterpoint.

My BF had the Grilled Sirloin in an onion confit, with rosemary potatoes and red wine jus. His sirloin was not as tender as one would have liked, but the rosemary potatoes were perfect.

For dessert, I chose the Berry Spring Rolls with Frozen Yoghurt which was a strange but delicious combination of hot and cold, pastry and fruit. My BF had the White Chocolate/Mocha cheesecake which was totally out of this world. Delicate, almost like a mousse, rich with chocolate and hinting of coffee. I could hear angels singing!

We finished with a pot of rooibos tea and chocolate truffles.

All-round, a lovely evening.
