A pleasant surprise

Marianne

We were due to drive in from the country to take my 87-year-old mother to lunch. I asked friends and family for ideas of nice lunch places in or near Tokai, where Mom lives. The Brasserie was the first to pop up. I browsed their website and A La Carte menu and it looked good, except for some lousy reviews. I hesitated. Then some friends who live up the road said they eat there all the time. They recommended the lunch special: R74 for a choice of 9 dishes, plus a glass of wine or coffee. They often have the grilled hake on garlic mash with a creamed mussel sauce. I phoned the restaurant and the manager answered my questions and read out all the specials, so I booked.

I donĂ¢??t know what it's like on a busy weekend, as we went in the week and the restaurant was half full. But the staff were friendly and helpful. Even the kitchen staff, when I went searching for the Ladies Room. The food was delicious, tender and beautifully laid out. The service was helpful and attentive. Our waiter told us about their Sunday roast special with roast beef, pork, chicken and sometimes lamb with Yorkshire puddings and other accompaniments are very reasonably priced.

They have a small walled garden courtyard overhung with trees, but we sat inside because of a cool breeze. In the end we had the lunch special (superb hake) and extra desserts and coffee from the A La Carte menu. The bill was reasonable, good value for money. We were glad we hadn't let the bad reviews put us off. My mom, an excellent cook all her life, thought it was a fabulous place and took their card to tell all her friends. So did we.

Don't miss out!

I can't stress enough just how good this restaurant is. From the moment you walk into the door the authentic French brasserie vibe almost bowls you over before you're whisked away by a friendly waiter to one of the pristine (yet unpretentious) tables with white overlays. With just a glance at the menu your mouth begins to water with dishes such as citrus marinated olives, free range chicken liver parfait, fillet au poivre, beer battered hake and the famous mushroom risotto.

A long marble and wooden bar runs along the side of the restaurant and you have the option of sitting at the granite topped kitchen counter to watch the masterful chefs in action. When the food arrives you may not be blown away by the presentation, but it's not about that. It's about wholesome flavour and Societi Brasserie does NOT disappoint.

Couple the brilliant food (probably some of the best in the city) with a great wine and you have the perfect night out. I think I may never cook at home again... Dare I say, favourite restaurant in Cape Town?
