Description:
Nestled in the heart of Greenside you will find a new treasure to treat your taste buds. The Greenside café is Jozi’s first Vegan restaurant owned and run by Dimitri Gutjahr. A vegan diet is free from animal products including dairy and eggs. Such a diet encourages optimum physical health, mental clarity and equanimity in ones being. There are a handful of meals that does include dairy at the Greenside café but everything can be prepared vegan, on request.

The Greenside café is situated below the Quan Yin meditation centre which encourages a philosophy of non violence and abstinence from intoxicants. This makes the Greenside café an alcohol and smoke free space – another 1st for Jozi. This type of environment is slowly becoming main stream as people realize that being healthy is a choice available to us all and essential if we want to live quality lives. Our health is our wealth and there are ways and means to enjoy life free from disease and illness. Good nutrition is one of those ways which makes the Greenside café the place to be!
.

The range of fresh and healthy juices offers a kaleidoscope of colours and tastes. The real challenge lies in what to choose? The naartjie juice, and refreshing miniola lassi juice comes highly recommended by satisfied customers, not to mention the uniquely prepared meals, such as nut bakes, pasta ribbons, and shooting stars.

Signature items such as Angelina's Hot Chocolate 'Paris style' are sure to culture a reputation for being the most decadent hot drink in town, perfect for those blustery Jozi days. Looking for a natural high? The traditional Chinese tea ceremony served by Dimitri encourages an entertaining sharing experience, “When I lived in Taiwan, you could find a tea shop on every corner, their tea comes from different mountains and slopes and the people drink it all day. It was such fun with all the added paraphernalia that I've decided to bring it into the restaurant.”

Some years ago Dimitri’s mother, Francoise Uzac, created the renowned Russian Tea Room, one of Joburg’s most talked about restaurants of its time. Dimitri is continuing his family’s legacy by bringing something completely different and very necessary to the people of Jozi – a vegan restaurant.

Influenced by Paul Pitchford’s book Healing With Whole Foods, world traveler Dimitri, 7 years a vegetarian, has a passion for great tasting food and has made it his business to make vegetarian delicious.

The Greenside café is a vegetarian and vegans haven in that the food is safe. It is prepared with integrity, love and mindfulness for human beings and our planet. The Greenside café is encouraging people to “Go Green, Be Veg and Save the Planet.” The impact that a vegetarian and even better, a vegan diet has on our planet is profound. It reduces the carbon foot print because the meat and dairy industry require deforestation, huge amounts of water, animal feed, antibiotics and steroids to produce meat and dairy. Animal agriculture uses up to 70% of the available clean water on earth.

IF WE ARE SERIOUS ABOUT SAVING OUR PLANET, we have to change. The Greenside cafe mission is to show people that a vegetarian and vegan diet can be delicious, exciting and filled with endless variety. We are what we eat and the Greenside Café is all about health and happiness.

You can be rest assured that by eating vegan/ vegetarian you are playing an integral part in cooling down and saving our precious planet. This fact has already been stated by the United Nations FAO in a report released in November 2006: That the main contributor of greenhouse gasses is caused by the animal agriculture industry – which contributes more to global warming than ALL transportation (cars, trucks, airplanes, trains, ships) methods combined.

Scientists’ have also uncovered that meat consumption is causing global food and water shortages as most of our crops and fresh water is used to sustain animals. Currently 1/3 of the world’s cereal harvest and over 90% of the world’s soya is used for animal feed. This simply does not make sense when 5.5 million children die from hunger every year. The following statistic is food for thought: 923 million hungry & 1.2 billion obese….

Albert Einstein once said: “Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances for survival of life on earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet.” So why not remember these words for your next lunch date and visit the Greenside café?

It is never too late to turn a new leaf. Let’s make it a green leaf. Dimitri and his friendly team will treat you to fantastic vegan/ vegetarian cuisine.

Raw food place finally in Jozi!, 15 Dec 2010
Reviewer: Jasmina (Adventurousness: Hold the garnish, hold the sauce!)

Comments: I was thrilled by food, atmosphere and environment at Greenside cafe! Telling all my friends about it.

Since I am raw foodist and on a lookout for places where I can eat out I was happy to be introduces to the very first raw food restaurant in Southern Africa by friends from Jozi.

@Dimitri: keep it up! We will keep on coming!

My favourite: lemon tart, cacao/maca smoothie, young Thai coconut drink straight from the fresh coconut.
