Description: The flagship of the Thai Africa Group is undoubtedly the Wangthai Sandton which overlooks the prestigious Nelson Mandela Square. An imposing entrance belies the deceptively spacious interior which leads to an outside balcony for al fresco dining overlooking the square. The décor is plush and sophisticated with majestic gold statues, curved walls and an unusual eye-catching ceiling. Picture Wangthai - Sandton in Sandton Central, Sandton, Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa The food is beautifully presented and tastes as good as it looks. This is not surprising given that the Thai chefs have been specially recruited from some of Bangkok’s finest 5-star hotels - authenticity is the key. The former Thai ambassador to South Africa heralded the Wangthai Sandton as the most authentic Thai restaurant he had experienced outside of Thailand. This accolade is well deserved as Wangthai Sandton has been the recipient of numerous awards including “top 100 restaurants” and “Diners Club wine list”. Starter recommendations are the Spicy Satays (pork, beef or chicken) served with peanut sauce, Prawns wrapped in rice pastry served with sweet chilli sauce, and the immensely popular “make your own” Spinach Cones. There is an excellent choice of curries, as well as plenty of dishes for vegetarians. The Duck dishes are all superb and the signature dish is definitely the stir-fried “Angry Duck”. Choose a slightly sweeter wine from the extensive wine list (which offers many carefully selected wines) to compliment the Thai flavours. |
