Description:
Brothers Marco and Luca have created a unique restaurant in Florida Road that is strongly reminiscent of the typical Italian pavement bistros. The restaurant is always lively and there is a buzz as people sit at tables on the pavement or dine inside. Bookings are not taken and part of the experience is joining the crowd waiting for tables and watching the passing parade. The brothers know most of their customers by name and run things with impeccable casualness.

The fare is ostensibly pizzeria, but in fact it has all the familiar Italian food and in addition there is the "On The Table" menu which provides a great selection of more innovative cooking. For Antipasto try the penne Mona Lisa - penne pasta with smoked salmon, diced feta, heaps of parmesan topped with fresh ripe avo & ground black pepper. Primi Piatti (the main course) includes the marvellous Pasta di Casa - choose a noodle and it is cooked with extra virgin olive oil, garlic, chilli and however many prawns you'd like. Or try the Tagliatelle Pescadore - full bodied baby squid cut in strips with red pepper in olive oil dry white wine, with a hint of chilli and garlic in a napoletana sauce, with a dash of cream and perhaps add some prawns. The traditional menu also offers a take away option. Pizza is served in the real Italian style, thin crispy crust brushed with a homemade napoletana sauce and topped with delicious mozzarella.

The décor is classy but understated, with the emphasis on comfort and functionality. The atmosphere is provided by the lively press of people and the European feel of the pavement seating. Prices are very reasonable and the restaurant is open till the early hours of the morning. Where else can you have a fine meal at 2 am?

ITALIAN COOKING HOME FROM HOME, 28 Jul 2010
Reviewer: TRISH (Adventurousness: What is the chef's special today?)

Comments: This is where it's at. Ambience, Italian food and Marco and waiters always give that personal touch. My hubby is half Italian and his opinion is that no other Italian restaurant comes close to Spiga - not even in Italy. They serve the best Gnocchi and Canelloni. Unfortunately we live in Waterfall so can't get there as often as we would like. Keep it up we love you.
