Style over substance?, 25 Mar 2011
Reviewer: anonymous (Adventurousness: What is the chef's special today?)

Comments: I loved the place and the outstanding service! However, I thought that too much attention was given to presentation, such as tuile fans adorning a salmon dish and spun sugar sails stuck on our boat-shaped creme brulees. Also too much fancy crockery, in my opinion. A starter was served in a cone-shaped ceramic creation which made me feel like a slightly embarrassed child behind a huge ice-cream sundae. My duck breast was moist but I would suggest scoring the skin to render the fat more completely; it was too fatty for me. In general, keep it simple, and concentrate on the food would be my advice. The chef knows what he's doing, but perhaps he lacks a bit of confidence, hence the showy presentation. But regardless of my quibbles, the experience was pretty good.

Comments: Well worth the drive from Johannesburg or Pretoria. Outstanding food, artistically presented. Competes with the very best restaurants in JHB and Pretoria. The food is quite simply unforgettable - I dream about returning. I often take overseas visitors to this restaurant and they simply can not believe that a small village like Hartbeespoort Dam has a restaurant of this world class quality!
