Description: This highly successful restaurant has been operating since October 2000 and is efficiently run by husband and wife team David and Nooch Chesney. David graciously admits that Nooch (who is Thai) is the heart and soul of the restaurant and oversees the general day to day running of things. She is an excellent hostess thanks to her efficient friendly manner, and Thai World has built up a good reputation with many regular customers. The restaurant is located on 2nd Ave and it’s hard to miss Thai World with its bright pink exterior. The building was originally two old semis which were converted at some stage to create a surprisingly spacious restaurant. The sheltered outside patio is hugely popular in the summer months, and roll down blinds and portable heaters ensure that the patio remains warm and dry during the colder winter months. The charming interior is certainly not dull with its strong combination of green, yellow and maroon wall colours, which contrasts well with the touches of gold in the statues and mirrors. Proud of her heritage Nooch ensures that a photo of the King is displayed over the main archway and the authentic ambience is further enhanced by the unusual fish tank encased in an intricately carved traditional Thai style house. Thai World is renowned for its takeaways and customers are fortunate to be able to enjoy a drink (or two!) at the cosy bar whilst waiting for their order. The menu is well priced and in addition to the a la carte service, on the first and last Fridays of each month, there is an excellent buffet available. Starter recommendations include the Sa Tay Kai (skewered chicken with home made peanut sauce), Por Pia Thod (vegetable and noodle spring rolls) and the classic Tom Yam Goong Pla Thalay (spicy lemon grass soup with prawns, fish or seafood and mushrooms). Main course recommendations are the coconut milk green curry with vegetables and the crispy duck stir fry with vegetables and cashew nuts. The stir fries are available in a variety of combinations either chicken, beef, pork or tofu and there are a number of excellent dishes for vegetarians. Save room for the chocolate spring rolls with ice cream, or the grilled banana with honey and ice cream. |
