Description:
Situated in the core of Groot Constantia Wine Estate - overlooking False Bay and the Constantia Valley, you will find the reinvented, all new Jonkershuis - now a wine bar and eatery.

This Cape Malay influenced bistro lies perpendicular to the Historic Manor House and is surrounded by ancient oak trees and the legendary Groot Constantia Vineyards.

With the critically acclaimed Societi Bistro in the V&A Waterfront as its sister restaurant, Jonkershuis continues in their tradition of enhancing the quality of life in its community. Open your first bottle of wine in the bar - and continue the celebration of family and friends with more wine - either in the vine covered courtyard, the cosy interior with a double sided fireplace, or outside overlooking False Bay on the original gravel road leading to the Manor House (former residence of Simon van der Stel, and the first Cloete family).

Co-owner Tammy Botbyl has spent time in the kitchens at London’s famed River Café and Moro restaurants. “What I really gleaned from them was how they use fresh produce daily, and how they recreate and change dishes subtly, depending on the produce they have in.” The well-priced menu at Jonkershuis concentrates on hearty meals and authentic flavours using fresh seasonal produce, with many of the dishes strongly influenced by the Cape Malay cooking style.

Laurence Burgess (formally Blues, The Bay Hotel and Morton’s chef) controls the colourful palette of culture and style in the Jonkershuis kitchen “Our menu is vast yet approachable, serving a healthy blend of traditional Malay classics and other contemporary favourites, supplemented with numerous daily specials on the black board”, Laurence comments. Expect to discover real Bobotie served with almond flavoured yellow rice and sambals, or four options of Malay Curry (Vegetable, Chicken, Lamb or Seafood). Classics!

“Our goal is to utilize this beautiful venue to its full capacity”, says Tammy. “We now have a Private dining room, and various menu packages for weddings and corporate events.” Our aim is to be as accommodating to the guests needs as possible and we offer a venue that is memorable and unique.

Since opening in late December of 2005, Jonkershuis has been delighting local and foreign guests alike with its intimate atmosphere, efficient service and authentic flavours. The comprehensive wine list is the perfect compliment to the experience.

Excellent , 10 May 2011
Reviewer: anonymous (Adventurousness: I'll order it as per the menu.)

Comments: We are a regular here and have enjoyed many a breakfast with friends and kids. We visited again and had afternoon cakes and where again impressed with the service from all the staff even when the restaurant was very full. Will be back many more times.
