Olympia Cafe

Cuisine: Coffee Shop , Deli , International
Ambiance: Trendy
Main course (avg): R100
Licensed: yes

Open: Breakfast , Lunch , Dinner
Daily

Description:
Simply furnished with wooden tables, an assortment of chairs and the paintings, photographs and artworks that we've come to expect from the area, the strongest décor statements are still the quaint harbour views on the one hand and the leaping flames and sizzling oil on the other.

The café continues to draw the crowds no matter what time or day of the week. The reasons are plenty. First, Kenneth and his team have maintained consistently high standards of quality and presentation, and are renowned for their passionate sourcing of only the best ingredients.

Then there's that bakery ( around the corner from the cafe): every morning the cafe counters and every available space are piled high with freshly baked ciabatta (the best in Cape Town), cinnamon sticks, croissants and other melt-in-the-mouth delights.

The wholesome menu changes with every batch of new ingredients that arrive, and can always be relied on to supply a good combination of fresh surprises and old favourites. The seared tuna, for example, is a must, with the Deli burger - prepared with freshly minced rump steak and served with roast vegetables and rocket leaves - definitely a burger made in heaven, according to a variety of comments!

Comments: Eating many times @ Olympia, I find them CONSISTENT in every aspect! The food is outstanding! Great value for money! Highly recommended. Just writing this is making me hungry - I want to go for lunch @ olympia! I don't mind what's on the menu, I know it will be very very good! I have yet to find good fool like this and value anywhere in Europe.

food from Mount Olympus in a seaside setting, 21 Jun 2011
Reviewer: mark dickson (Adventurousness: What is the chef's special today?)

Comments: Having eaten several times at this restaurant it is my experience that each time I have had cuisine equal to anything from the best eateries elsewhere in the world. The food is always interesting, always creative, always a cut above. The venue is unusual and slightly off putting in that it looks uninspiring and un-modern. The tables and chairs and decor would be at home in a cafe in the Karoo, complete with a few buzzing flies. It is therefore quite a shock to be served platefuls of delights that dazzle and charm and bring eye closing expressions of pleasure. This is truly one of Cape Town's finest restaurants, and finest bakeries, and is known to supply breads and rolls to other establishments elsewhere in the city. On two occasions in 2011 I have eaten a tuna steak, lightly seared, and garnished with tiny potatoes along with a delicate sauce, and felt that I had come close to experiencing levitation. The venue is quite small, and many gastronomes queue to get in, so it is wise to arrive at 11.30 if you wish to enjoy lunch which begins at 12.00. You will not be sorry.
