Description:
Hillcrest Berry Orchards is one of those establishments that, once discovered, make it hard to resist a second visit. Not only does it offer an exceptionally wholesome menu for breakfast, lunch and teas, but also has a farm shop and deli, which displays an impressive selection of top quality products that taste as good as they look. The tea garden was originally started as a way of showcasing the jams, dessert toppings and fresh berries produced by Hillcrest. While the scones, berry muffins and baked cheesecake remain firm favourites, today the menu offers a wonderful selection of healthy meals which are prepared, as far as possible, using certified organic products.

Situated in the lovely Banhoek valley, just over the Helshoogte pass from Stellenbosch, the tea garden has spectacular views across the valley to the Groot Drakenstein and Jonkershoek mountains. A large terrace overlooking a glorious rose bed offers plenty of tables with shady umbrellas, for visitors to sit and enjoy the majestic scenery. On cold wet days enjoy the comfort of the old fashioned fire and cosy interior with its cottage-style décor and delightful ambience. Peaceful and secluded, Hillcrest Berry Orchards is one of the best-kept secrets of the Cape.

Daily specials feature on the menu (according to what is in season) and for visitors with special diets sucrose free jams, gluten free desserts, wheat free bread and soya milk are available on request. Breakfast specialties include Hillcrest?s own honey-roasted muesli with home-made yoghurt and berry compote while the impressive Breakfast Plate is fit for a king. Light lunches are served throughout the day and popular choices include the home-made soups, quiche of the day and three-cheese herb tart. For those wanting more substantial fare, try the pasta of the day or traditional Cape bobotie, both of which are highly recommended.

Desserts are definitely Hillcrest?s forte and the choice includes baked cheesecake with berry coulis, fruit pastries and an excellent selection of home-made ice-creams featuring unique combinations such as cape gooseberry and ginger, or blackberry and mint.

My first visit, 08 Jun 2013
Reviewer: ursula  (Adventurousness: What is the chef's special today?)

Comments: I must say the only problem I had today was the chicken rolls were extremely oily and over cooked! Otherwise I thoroughly enjoyed my berry tart it was delicious!

For an excellent experience, 17 Oct 2010
Reviewer: Ewald Horn (Adventurousness: I'll order it as per the menu.)

Comments: If you love berries, and feel like some great croissants, this is the place to visit. Great view, lovely outside on a sunny morning with really great food.

This is a must if you are in the area, there are exquisite berry preserves, drinks and other foods all made with fresh ingredients from the farm.
