Description:
One of the most popular destinations for both locals and visitors to Stellenbosch, the Jan Cats Restaurant (located at the Stellenbosch Hotel), not only offers guests breakfast, but lunch and dinner can also be enjoyed from a range of fine local and foreign dishes offered by an a la Carte menu.
Guests can indulge themselves with the impressive menu choices on offer, including Gourmet Burgers, scrumptious Wraps and Ciabatas, unique Salads, a selection of Finger Foods, Monster Meals which include Beef or Pork Ribs and Prawns, to mouth-watering Desserts or Cheese Platters. A wide variety of vegetarian choices are also available.
The extensive wine list supports the best offered by local vineyards located within the breathtaking wine district.
Sidewalk tables are ideal for a pub lunch or visit with friends and offer the ideal venue for a relaxing atmosphere.

Strategically located in the heart of the beautiful and historical town, Jan Cats is situated in Dorp Street – a stone’s throw away from the longest row of historical buildings in the country, curio shops and very close to the numerous well-preserved thick-walled museums where you can step back in time. It is an ideal destination from which guests can explore the heart of South Africa’s Wine Country.
The restaurant was named after the original owner of the property (which was built on land granted by Governor Simon van der Stel between 1692 and 1701). Jan Cats was Stellenbosch’s medical doctor/dentist/barber. The Stellenbosch Hotel, or Swart House, was built after a fire destroyed the original building in the late 18th century and opened its doors in 1876. The building was restored to its former glory in 1987 after which it was declared a national monument.
The Jan Cats Restaurant also has a separate bar area where guests can enjoy a drink in the social and inviting setting.
