It is 10 years since this family-run restaurant was first opened by Krish Pillay, and together with the expertise of his Indian Chef, the Royal Delhi continues to produce the best curries in Port Elizabeth. Situated in the suburban side of Central, with plenty of safe parking, the rather ordinary exterior of this popular Indian restaurant is certainly deceiving, as it hides a richly decorated interior. The walls are a deep shade of blue and are complimented with gold drapes and attractive check tablecloths in shades of blue, gold and green.

The well-stocked bar offers diners a chance to enjoy a pre-dinner drink, and in addition to the standard wine list Krish offers one or two rather special wines attractively displayed in baskets. Whilst curries are of course the mainstay of the menu, there is a decent selection of seafood as well as several meat dishes, for those who find hot spicy food too overwhelming for the taste buds. Non curry eaters will enjoy one of the cool crisp salads followed by an excellent Sole Bon Femme - topped with prawns and asparagus. Alternatively, on chilly winter evenings, opt for the Cream of Butternut & Cinnamon Soup and the braised Lamb Shank served with mash, gravy and vegetables.

For an unusual starter try the Puree and Patha - crisp pastry with spicy fried mudoombie leaves. Other starters which deserve special mention are the home-made Samoosas and Fish Cakes which certainly live up to their reputation, and both are served with a delicious piquant Royal Delhi sauce. When it comes to choosing from the curry section of the menu the choice is indeed a difficult one, as each dish has its own unique appeal. Current favourites are the deboned Lamb or the Chicken and Prawn Curry, closely followed by the Curried Oxtail. For a cool soothing dessert the Bombay Crush (a pink Oriental milkshake) is highly recommended and a fitting finale to first class South Indian Cuisine.
