Restaurant description

Essence was not the founder of coffee, oh no. We are, however, the makers of great coffee.

Essence was born in the cozy coop of sleepy hollow, a mere bud of a thought at the time. It was a long time coming though. Born and raised here in Pietermaritzburg I was always so fascinated with the lack of entertainment and dining facilities. Of course anyone that knows Maritzburg, knows that people drive straight through the city to the Meander when they're looking for a good occasional outing. They want an ambience partnered with comfort and of course good food and drinks. A place you could take a date, or the wife and kids for a family outing. A place that tastes and feels like home, with a touch of rustic creativity and contemporary genius.

And so, we embarked on nurturing a place for people to feel at home. Our food, culture and setup all hone into a place of comfort, warmth, laughter, good coffee and good food!

Here at Essence you will see all of these aspects come together and work beautifully. From our simple soups and homemade bread, to delectable steaks and mouthwatering cakes. Everything has its own Essence and lots of it.
