Although the Obz Cafe has been an iconic landmark of Observatory for the past twenty years, the new Obz Café only opened in May 2011. Restaurant owner Gavin Hagger is no newcomer to the industry however, having put legendary Durban hotspot Joe Kool's on the gastronomic map.

"I remember the Obz Café in its heyday almost twenty years ago, so I jumped at the opportunity to own it and get it going again," he says. Newly refurbished with a New York-type feel, restaurant décor is upmarket, yet relaxed. Exposed brick work and red and white check tablecloths add to the bistro's ambience, while friendly wait staff and a terrific vibe all make for a great dining experience. For those preferring to dine al fresco, there is also sidewalk seating - where you can get the true sense of the bohemian suburb - and an outside courtyard area. The menu is uncomplicated and caters to all tastes. The porcini mushroom pasta is also highly recommended, as well as the beef carpaccio starter, bursting with all kinds of delicious flavours. Their thin crust pizzas are very popular and some have called their burgers 'the best in town!'Wheat and gluten free pastas and pizzas are also available. It's the perfect spot for a casual business lunch or dinner, birthday party, romantic dinner or long boozy Sunday evening. A place to cater for all seasons, the wood burning pizza oven ensures it's always warm and cosy on those winter days and nights and fresh french doors keep it cool in the summer. The venue also has free wi-fi. Experienced bar staff make great coffees and cocktails and an adjoining bar Desperados can make for a whole night of entertainment!

I tasted my partner's burger which I'm definitely going back for next time! Wait staff were friendly, area was buzzing. Bar and Theatre next door so seems like there's always something happening there. Will be back!"
